Ok what thanksgiving will be complete with out the thanksgiving turkey. Thanksgiving without a turkey is like eating fries without ketchup *Pun*. since we already have our holiday eggnog and our thanksgiving pie, we can go to the main event… the Turkey.
Heart disease remains the number one killer in the United States and its numbers are expected to grow in the coming years due to the dramatic rise in obesity in recent years. One of the primary causes of coronary heart disease is high cholesterol levels which lead to the formation of fatty plaques that will cling to one another and form blockages in the arteries. When these blockages become severe enough, a heart attack occurs…death is probable unless treatment is received immediately. To avoid this scenario, millions of Americans take high cholesterol medication and eat highly restrictive diets. But for people on the Atkins diet, cholesterol medication may not be necessary.
Diabetes is caused by the body’s inability to properly regulate blood sugar levels. This essential energy is literally the lifeblood of your body. In a normal functioning body, blood sugar levels are stabilized by periodic injections of insulin. Produced by the pancreas, insulin plays a number of roles in the body, including reducing blood sugar levels to acceptable levels. However, with the Atkins diet, insulin shots may not be necessary as the diet help keeps those levels low anyway.
The number one medical problem that remains under diagnosed year after year is constipation. Nobody wants to go to the trouble of scheduling a doctor’s appointment when they have constipation. In the majority of cases, the condition goes away within a day or two anyway—long before most of us could ever get in to actually see our doctor! However, when constipation becomes chronic or lasts for more than a few days, serious medical problems can arise. Are chronic constipation problems a concern for those on the Atkins diet?
Joint pain is a condition that we all experience occasionally due to physical activity, injuries, etc. However, as we age, joint pain may become a chronic condition due to arthritis. There are two main varieties of arthritis: Osteoarthritis is the more common and affects some 20 million people in the United States alone. The condition is caused by a gradual loss of cartilage and the resulting overgrowth of bone in the joints. This causes joint pain (especially in the knees, hips, elbows, and even fingertips) because bone grinds against bone instead of having a cushion of cartilage.
The final phase of the Atkins diet may be the most difficult of the four. Otherwise known as “Maintenance”, the final phase of the Atkins diet concentrates on keeping the pounds off. It is quite common for people losing 30 or more pounds to gain a lot of the weight back a year after reaching their target weight. Studies have consistently shown that the Atkins diet outperforms low-fat diets where losing more pounds are concerned—in the first six months. Unfortunately, many Atkins dieters will lose a lot of their lead over the low-fat dieters after 12 months—their weight loss numbers are similar. The key to any successful diet, including Atkins, is to include enough aerobic and anaerobic exercise in your weekly schedule.
